Mr. Baxter seldom raised his voice, but I heard him shouting into the phone as I went by a few minutes later. I froze with surprise. “You didn’t know Tommy Ferris was a client of mine when you sold him that black horse? I can certainly believe that—of course I recognize the horse, I don’t care what fairy tale you told about him. This horse has only got a handful of shows left in him, and you know it, and when he breaks down I’m going to send him to you, stuffed!” He hung up furiously. I crept away.

Now we stood looking at the horse in the straw and the stall was filled with the sound of his heavy breathing. As we watched he raised his head, surged to his feet, and stood with his legs spread and his head down between his knees. He didn’t bother to shake the golden strands of straw from his back and neck.

Connie looked at the horse with a worried frown, and then looked over to Steve. He shrugged his shoulders. “Sure doesn’t look good to me,” he said. Connie went off to get the thermometer and I went to the front door to watch anxiously for Dr. Whitlow.
